The National Forestry Strategy highlights how, The Gambia have had a productive forest cover, and the vegetation was once described as forest savannah. Over the years, the forest became visibly degraded having the most severe effect on the livelihood of the rural population. Responding to the accelerating desertification driven by widespread deforestation and effects of the changing climate, Government of The Gambia (GoTG), through Department of Forestry (DoF) commissioned the preparation of this second National Forestry Action Plan (NFAP II) in order to provide practical guidance on DoF programming in sustainable forest management during the next ten years. This is supported by Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations Country Office (CO) with funds provided by Global Environment Facility (GEF).
